Working principles of Roots vacuum pumps

 The root vacuum pump is a rotary volumetric vacuum device that is employed as a booster pump for several types of fore-pumps, to increase their pressure and pumping speed. Basically, the principle of operation of root pumps is corresponding to the system of the multi-stage pumps. It regulates by pumping a lubricant with a pair of incorporating lobes corresponding to a set of stretched gears however, it operates without contacting and sometimes without any sealing fluids like oil/water in the working chamber. 


Working principle of root vacuum pumps


The single lobe root pump consists of two counter-rotating interlinked 'lobed' components, synchronously counter-rotating rotors which contactless rotate within a chamber - the rotors are separated from one another by a narrow void. 

The gas penetrates through an inlet flange (located upright to the rotating units) to the conveying cell formed by the two rolling pistons in the chamber. Then it gets entrapped between the oppositely spinning rotors and the chamber walls where air with higher absolute pressure flows from the pressure chamber into the next chamber, and that compressed gas then finds its way out through the exhaust port. 


Characteristics


The characteristics of the root pumps differ depending on the numerous factors such as- the number of stages, unit size, speed of operation, initial inlet pressure and ambient temperature. 


Some of the factors which adversely affect the performance of the pump are:


  • It delivers better performance when used for pumping light gases. 

  • One of the perks of these pumps is it produces very less noise even at higher speeds. 

  • There is significantly less or no vibration during the operation.

  • It has a considerably high pumping speed which usually ranges between 40 to 200m³/hr
